DSQUARED2 Cufflink

There are very few items of jewelry that are acceptable for a man to wear. Let me preface the rest of this post by saying, if you’ve read my bio, you know I’m not in my twenties anymore, so if this makes me sound old fashioned, I really don’t give a crap. So, listen up, guys. You can wear a wedding ring, obviously. A watch, of course. Maybe, MAYBE an earring, or a pair of them, as long as the earring isn’t bigger than the ear lobe. If your earrings are bigger than your girlfriend’s or wife’s, there’s a problem. But gauges and hoops or studs attached to eyebrows or noses? Yeah, not attractive. I really don’t get the gauges thing. If you get your ears pierced, you can let the holes close up later if you want to. But gauges? Once you make those huge holes in your ears, that’s it. You have to either keep those things in your ears forever, or get an ear lobe lift so your ear lobes don’t hang loose down to your shoulders when you’re 60. Ew. And don’t even think about a pinky ring unless you’re a gangster in the ’40s, ok? Anyway, another item of jewelry that’s acceptable is cufflinks. They may not be true jewelry, per se, since they’re not worn on the body, but on the clothing, but I think they still qualify. Also, with Father’s Day coming up, they’re an excellent gift for Dad, whether he wears them to the office every day, or just needs a pair for special occasions. Let’s start with this DSQUARED2 Cufflink.

The cufflinks are contemporary in design, and very masculine with clean lines and a square shape. The majority of the cufflink is made from gold-tone metal, but the surface is silver-toned, and adorned with ridged accents. Along one side of the cufflink is a line of sparkling dark crystals. While crystals on anything might usually be on the feminine side, the fact that the crystals are opaque keeps the masculine look intact. The back is hinged for easy on and off, and they’re only half an inch wide by half an inch high, so they’re not too obtrusive. Hurry! There’s only one pair left for $164 at Zappos.com.

Budget Saving Alternatives

If you’re not ready to spend that much on your dad this year—and let’s face it, everyone’s still recovering from the recession, right?—then you can opt for this D&G Dolce & Gabbana Blade Cuff Link. I’m not sure whose brilliant idea it was to name this cufflink “Blade,” since it’s not elongated, it’s not sharp, but square instead. Whatever. I’ll never understand the logic designers use to name their stuff, or the lack there of. Anyway, the Blade cufflinks are made from stainless steel, so they’re silver and super shiny. The center is filled with a tortoise shell colored resin for a classy look. They’re about half an inch all the way around, which I think is just the right size for a cufflink. You want them to be big enough to be seen, but not so big that they detract from the rest of the suit. The best part is, they’re on sale. Normally $119, you can get the Blade cufflinks now for just $95.20 at Zappos.com.

If your dad is the type to wear shirts and ties, but not shirts that require cufflinks, go with a nice tie tack for Father’s Day instead. Check out this Nixon Omar Tie Tack, for example. It’s very simple in design, sleek, and easy to attach with a secure clip closure on the back. The majority of the tie tack is dark metal, but the front is filled with deep red enamel. The red is just dark enough to not be too flashy, but to add a touch of color to Dad’s ensemble. The front also has a tiny logo in one corner, but it doesn’t detract from the simple design. The Omar is also available in midnight, which is filled with black enamel, and has a tiny bit of gold accent around the edges. Get your dad both since they’re only $46 at Zappos.com.
