If you were paying attention to New York Fashion Week, or if you were actually there, you saw Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel bring back the wooden clog. The clog was a staple of ’70s fashion, and it seems a lot of ’70s chic—wait, those two words don’t go together. How about ’70s boho-chic? Much better. Anyway, a lot of that stuff is coming back. Flouncy, lacy tunic tops, wide-legged jeans, platform sandals, and denim jackets, which really come and go in nearly every decade. Next thing you know, Martha Stewart will be teaching everyone how to make macramé plant hangers, complete with enormous orange beads, so we can grow our own, uh, completely legal, unsmokeable plants. Yeah. I wonder how much more entertaining Martha’s show would be if she were under the influence? Think she’d loosen up? Yeah, I don’t either. In the meantime, Chanel put a modern twist on the clog by dressing it up with different materials and straps, putting it on a platform, and jacking it up so high it should come with a health hazard warning. Those things are broken ankles waiting to happen. So consider these training clogs so you can get used to walking on hunks of wood before you graduate to the newer ones. Ok, when they named this clog “super high,” they hadn’t seen the Chanel ones yet. Or maybe they meant something else. After all, these clogs are created using an original ’70s model that was found in an old factory in southern Sweden. How far south Sweden are we talking? You know I’m not a fan of UGG boots. I’m not even going to waste anymore space talking about how hideous they are, or how ridiculous people look when they wear them with shorts. But because of that, I don’t really go looking for any other UGG shoes. This UGG Abbie clog just jumped out at me. Well, stomped is more like it. Look at those clodhoppers. They could really do some damage if you’re not careful. The Abbie is a little different from a traditional clog, though, in that rather than just a wood sole, UGG added a cushioned footbed covered with lambskin at the heel, and sheepskin at the forefoot. I don’t know whether that’s a good thing or not because I’ve been told that the way your foot has to grip the wooden sole when you walk in clogs is actually good for muscle toning and circulation in the foot and legs. The walking surfaces are also covered with a layer of textured rubber for extra cushion and traction. I like the stud detailing around the top of the platform, too. Yes, I know these are garden clogs, but I couldn’t resist. They’re also from Sweden, but have a lower profile than the Hasbeens. What I like most, though, is that the Cape Clogs Garden Wooden Swedish Clog comes in more than thirty colors and patterns. Yes, thirty. I like this floral one. It’s pretty and very springy. You’ll find other floral patterns, as well as fun ones like peace signs, a soccer ball, skulls and crossbones, puzzle pieces, and even metallic bronze and silver uppers. You’re lucky I’m even blogging today. My fingers are tired from all the tweeting I did last night during the Oscars. As always, it was an interesting show with a lot of great moments, and some truly outrageous ones. I love that someone coming up on stage unexpectedly is now called “pulling a Kanye.” Way to be remembered, KW. Didn’t he also used to be involved with the music industry somehow? Hmm…good question. All I know is he likes to make a scene whenever possible, and now when anyone else does it, they’re compared to him. Anyway, almost everyone looked fabulous (SJP, leave the big girl dresses in the closet, ‘kay? Oh, and comb your hair!), there weren’t many surprises as far as the awards go (you didn’t really think James Cameron would get to make that king of the world speech twice, did you?), and it’s all over for another year. You know, I can’t hear the name Vivienne Westwood without thinking of Gwen Stefani’s “Rich Girl.” I’ve had it stuck in my head ever since I saw these shoes. At least it’s a song I like pretty well, and not something horrible that would make me want to jam sharp pencils in my ears. Something like, oh, I don’t know, “Umbrella” by Rihanna. Oh yeah, you heard me. That girl cannot sing. She alternates between whining and a robotic monotone. What’s that? It’s too soon to pick on her because of the whole Chris Brown debacle? Whatever. Yeah, he’s a douchebag, but she was posing as a singer even before all that happened. And can she not appear on or in a magazine now without being topless? Oh yeah, I take her so much more seriously now. She’s just the poster child for empowered women. Right. Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, Vivienne Westwood. After a few posts about the spring neutral trend, I needed some color, and boy did I find it. Vivienne didn’t hold back with this D’Orsay Roman pump.

Not only will it wake you up from that neutral shoe nap, it fits right in with another spring trend—orange. As you’ve seen, one of spring’s biggest trends is neutrals. Mostly, neutral platform pumps, which go great with jeans, slacks, just about anything, really. Whether you go with those, or opt for neutral flats instead, you need a matching handbag, right? Chances are, you have at least one basic-colored handbag in your closet, a black or a brown, maybe a tan or even off-white. Those will work for a lot of outfits, and most of your shoes, but even colors like this that are usually so versatile can clash with the latest neutrals of beige, ecru, and even blush-hued beige. If you’re going to work a trend, then work it all the way, don’t do it half-assed. You know what happens when you go half-assed with fashion? You end up looking like Dakota Fanning, who looks like a poor imitation of Lindsay Lohan, and trust me, I never thought I’d say that about anyone. Good grief, girls. I can’t figure out why anyone would name anything after a site that developed and then tested nuclear weapons, but maybe that’s just how Tommy Hilfiger rolls. Yes, sure, fine, there’s other stuff in Los Alamos, and I’m sure it’s a very nice place to live, if you don’t mind having three eyes and a couple of extra appendages. I’ll take your word for it. Despite its questionable name, I do like Hilfiger’s Los Alamos Carryall. It has a very classic look, which may be another hark back to the ’40s. It’s also a little sporty with its grosgrain trim. The Los Alamos is all leather, right down to its dual handles. It also has a detachable canvas shoulder strap in case that extra appendage is otherwise occupied. The Prezzo Bow Hobo is a little on the darker neutral side, but it’s a nice, simple design that would be a great addition to any wardrobe. I really like the gathered bow detail on the front. As much as I love the spring trend of neutral platforms, heels aren’t always right for every occasion. Not to mention, sometimes you just want to give your feet a break. As for you, if you haven’t made it to the salon for your pedi yet, don’t even think about putting those neutral sandals on yet. Seriously. Opt instead for a nice pair of flats that will give your feet a break, and spare the rest of us any sandpaper heels or chipped polish toes. I know I harp on that, but come on. How can some people walk out of the house showing their feet when those feet look like they’re shedding skin faster than a snake does? Ew. And can you imagine someone walking around your house leaving their skin flakes all over your floor? Hold on…give me a minute…I just threw up in my mouth a little. So yeah, before you go leaving bits of yourself everywhere you walk, get a pedi. And if you haven’t done it yet, cover your feet. One good way to do that is with the Paul Mayer/Attitudes Good Flat.

First off, I have to say I’m not crazy about the sole and heel of this shoe. I think it would’ve been much cuter with a traditional ballet sole, or even a short stacked heel. But the way it reminds me of a Chanel ballet flat—without the Chanel price tag—I’m willing to forgive a slightly clunky looking sole. Besides, it’s rubber, so there’s less chance of slipping and twisting an ankle. I twisted an ankle about a month ago, and it STILL hurts. So maybe right now I’m attracted to the safety features more than the look. Nah, it’s still the look. The Good flat (Is that like subliminal marketing there, or what?) has a great quilted pattern sewn into the leather. This platino color has a bit of a pearly sheen to it, especially in the smooth, patent toe cap. The lip is covered with grosgrain, and the dainty bow ends in slender, gold tone metal caps. The other good thing about the sole, despite its look, is that it’s flexible, so it’ll be comfortable to walk in. It also comes in a beige with black toe cap, or all black option. We’re just all about the oh-so-clever shoe names today. Check out this Fitzwell Dyan flat. Do you think it fits well? It better with a name like that. Actually, all kidding aside, one nice thing about this shoe is it comes in different widths. Sure, designer shoes come in different sizes, but designers seem to employ a one width fits all mentality. For some shoes that have a little give, it’s ok. But for others, you practically need a crow bar to get in and out of them if your feet aren’t narrow little rectangles the way designers seem to think women’s feet are. Anyway, the Dyan is made from genuine leather—suede, in this camel kid color. It features pleats and a feminine knot at the vamp. The inside is just as nice as the outside. First, it has a leather sock liner, which is comfortable and wicks away moisture to keep your feet dry if you wear it bare. It also has a gel insole at the heel for cushioning. Add the durable, flexible rubber heel, and the Dyan is as comfortable as it is pretty. Oh, and it comes in several other colors and varieties: black kid suede, black kid leather, and bronze, pewter, or pink foil leather. Yes, pink foil. I haven’t made my mind up about that one yet. Now, I would never think to strap a big, thick buckle onto a ballet flat. Usually, I go for ballet flats that are feminine, with dainty details and pretty adornments. This Fossil Maddox flat is kind of in-your-face with the big buckled strap over the vamp—but I like it. It’s eye-catching, if nothing else, even though the buckle is in a muted silver tone metal. The Maddox also features contrast stitch detailing, and tiny silver tone studs at the heel lip. It has the kind of sole I really like to see on a flat, but it’s still flexible. The footbed is also cushioned for comfort, and the interior is lined with leather. A new season is on the way, the designers and retailers are putting out the new collections and putting all the old stuff on sale or clearance. All the big designers have been showing their wares at New York Fashion Week, and spring is on everyone’s mind. I know it’s on mine! I’m not a fan of hot weather, but enough with the cold, wet, drizzly, nasty stuff already! In my continuing blog dance for spring weather, I give you some awesome sandals today. I’m thinking I may do a rain boot post soon, though. Just saw some really cute ones yesterday, and judging by the forecast I saw on the news this morning, they’re going to come in really handy for the next few days. Or weeks. Or months, since it seems like this winter is interminable. That groundhog totally lied! But for now, I’m focusing on sandals. The spring sandal trend is neutrals, whether platform, stiletto, or wedge, which will be a perfect complement to the other spring trend, denim. Slip a pair of these babies on with a pair of skinny or boot leg jeans, and you’re all set. Well, you need a top, too. Don’t go out in just jeans and sandals and get arrested and tell the cops I said it was ok to go out like that. I’ll totally deny it. The main thing I love about this sandal is the color. When you think of neutrals, your mind probably immediately goes to tan, ecru, beige, or something similar, right? Is it possible to fall in love with a shoe? Ever since I saw this Kelsi Dagger Belize Sandal, I can’t stop thinking about it. I can’t eat, I can’t sleep. I find myself doodling little pictures of it surrounded by hearts. Ok, not really. But if I ever wrote anything anymore instead of being on the computer all the time, I probably would. The Belize is gorgeous and cute at the same time. The leather upper features a great neutral color scheme in the straps, the platform accent, and the two leather rose embellishments that adorn the front. Love this shoe! The double buckles are adjustable for a great fit, and the ankle straps will keep the sandal from flapping when you walk. I hate when sandals do that. Only flip-flops should do that. The four-inch heel is wrapped in the same leather the straps are made of, and the one-inch platform sets it off. I wouldn’t hide this sandal under any jeans. I am a big Chinese Laundry fan. Their shoes are cute, comfortable, and affordable. I have several pairs in my closet, in several styles, heel heights, and colors. I may be adding this one to the collection soon. In fact, I may need a new closet soon, just for my shoes. Hmm…maybe it’s time to convert that spare bedroom. Anyway, the Love Me sandal is a bridge between winter and spring. Yes, it’s a sandal, but the upper is all suede. It’s also in a trendy neutral color, but it’s a little on the darker side. In fact, it also comes in black. It also has a little more of a shoe back than sandal. On the very back is a little zipper to close the shoe around your heel. The weekend was absolutely gorgeous! For the first time in weeks, I was able to go out without a coat on. I spent some time walking around downtown, got a pedi and a massage, went shopping, enjoyed the sunshine. Then I woke up today to a gray, rainy day. Blah. What a crappy way to start the week. I don’t know about you, but I need something to perk me up, so I decided to go a little whimsical today. Maybe not so much whimsical as unusual. In any case, it’s colorful! Unlike Lady Gaga’s latest fashion folly at the Brit Awards. What. The. Hell. Now it’s just getting ridiculous. I mean, it’s one thing to wear something unique that turns heads, something no one else is wearing, or ever would wear. I like that about her. But now it’s like she’s just going for shock value, and that gets old real quick. What is this, a contemporary version of a muumuu? Just stop, ok? So yeah, let’s get some color going, shall we? Like this cute little Lauren Merkin Lucy Stingray/Rainbow Zip Trim Clutch.

Ok, I have to say, that is a ridiculously long name for a tiny handbag. The only thing I can think is that it’s meant to distract from the designer’s last name. It’s rather unfortunate. Just do a Google search for merkin and check out the first few results. That’s all I’m saying. Anyway, this bag caught my eye for it’s muti-colored accents, but I liked it even more once I checked them out up close. They’re zippers! Well, half zippers. And each little tooth is a different color. I can honestly say I’ve never seen that on any other handbag. The colors are beautifully spring, and go perfectly with the mild green leather. The interior is lined with gorgeous off-white ribbed fabric, and the bag has a frame closure. It’s a very chic addition to your spring wardrobe. It’s $295 at Endless.com.

I have to be honest, I’m not super crazy about this Melie Bianco S-10-12 Clutch. Didn’t Chevrolet used to have a pickup truck called the S10? I don’t think I’d name any handbag I designed after anything so pedestrian as a pickup truck. Then again, looking at this clutch, it does remind me of those lawn chairs made of woven plastic, so maybe the name is a good fit after all. We can call it trailer park chic. Right. It does feature a few nice spring colors, though, and it comes with a detachable shoulder strap in case your hands are full with a 12-pack and carton of cigarettes. Who says fashion can’t be utilitarian? The outer material is all synthetic—I know, big surprise—and the interior is satin, what else? The top zips closed. This Mad Imports Gigi Clutch is a bit of a departure from the handbags I normally go for, but I like it. It’s sort of bohemian, don’t you think? The body is made from woven raffia in an olive green, so it’s environmentally friendly, and perfect for warmer weather. The flowers are embroidered in happy colors like orange, yellow, pink, and lavender. Other varieties of the clutch have embroidered stripes (one that looks like rainbows—very ’70s), and a couple of them have wooden accents, one of which is a butterfly on an orange bag—easily my second favorite! Alexander McQueen Houndstooth Pump

So after Alexander McQueen passed away so unexpectedly, I was shocked to find I hadn’t yet featured any of his designs on the blog. As promised, I’m remedying that. McQueen was known for a lot of outrageous, provocative, and unusual designs. You know what I keep thinking is that he had the same last name as Steve McQueen, who was known as a total badass because of most of his film roles. Sheryl Crow even wrote a song about him, which is one of about three songs of hers I can tolerate. So it’s fitting that Alexander McQueen earned a reputation as a badass in the fashion world, bucking tradition, and in many ways being a nonconformist. But he was also versatile, and did create some classic, sophisticated designs. I mean, even First Lady Michelle Obama has worn some of his clothes. Can you see her walking around in those lobster claw shoes Lady Gaga wore in her “Bad Romance” video? You’re imagining it now, aren’t you? Heh. Anyway, in that vein, I ran across this shoe that’s a little on the conservative side and fell in love—the Alexander McQueen Houndstooth Pump.

Ok, I made up the houndstooth pump part because the shoe is actually named Alexander McQueen 230446W0JU1, which is a mouthful and not fun or descriptive at all. Don’t get me started on the hideous alphanumeric names designers use. Anyway, it’s a classic shoe with a contemporary spin. The houndstooth section of the shoe is woven fabric, while the heel, pointed toe cap, sole, and dual straps are leather. The straps are adjustable with dainty buckles in silver tone hardware. And I love the shape of the heel. It mimics the curvy shape of a woman’s leg. At 3.5 inches high, it will give your legs a lift and an elongated look. I suspected that after his death, McQueen’s product prices would skyrocket, and while that may be the case in his store or elsewhere, it’s not true online. This pump usually costs $874, but it’s on sale right now for $567 at Zappos.com. Buying it would be like owning a small piece of fashion history.

Just like houndstooth is a classic pattern, animal prints never seem to go out of style. They’re more trendy at some times than others, but have been a fashion staple for decades. As long as you do it right, you don’t have to look like you just stepped out of the trailer park. At an airport once, I saw a woman decked out from head to toe in leopard print. Shoes, blouse, ankle-length coat, hat, and even her carry-on bag. It was already overkill, but it was really hard on the eyes because each item was a slightly different leopard print, in slightly different shades of brown, tan, and gold. I mean, if you’re going to go all out with one pattern, at least make sure it’s uniform. The odd thing was, this woman was walking around the airport like she’d just won a best-dressed contest. Maybe she was color blind. Or pattern blind. Anyway, if you’re going to wear or carry anything in animal print, use it as an accent, not the whole shebang. Leopard print shoes with a color coordinated ensemble. A zebra print handbag with your little black dress. You get the idea. And please, for the love of all that is holy, don’t fall victim to those not-occurring-in-nature animal prints in neon colors. That’s just all kinds of wrong. This Nine West Buttermilk Pump is a good example of how to wear animal print. It’s subtle, but paired with a pair of black cigarette pants or a tan pencil skirt, they’ll add a spot (Get it? Spot? Ok, fine.) of excitement to your outfit. The upper is calf hair, while the sole is man made, and they sit on a 3.5-inch heel. To round out the classically patterned pump theme, check out this J. Renee Alisa pump. It’s retro, which is all the rage right now. When isn’t retro all the rage? You can wear just about anything old or out of style and call it retro, and you’re suddenly trendy. Fashion is so weird sometimes. Anyway, the Alisa features a daintily plaid fabric upper with a high-shine leather, pointy toe cap and embellishment on the vamp, which is accented by silver tone hardware. I love the little v-cut detail at the top of the vamp. The 3.5-inch heel is also covered in that same shiny leather, and has a nice silhouette. The insole is lightly cushioned for comfort, a welcome feature in any pump. It’s also available in a saucy red, which would be great with a black and white ensemble. I couldn’t resist just one more post in my pink & orange theme. You’ll probably be seeing a lot more of this color combination here since, first of all, it’s one of my favorites, and because it’s a hot trend for spring. But for now, if you’re going to go with the shoes, or the handbags, or both, you can complete the look with a good accessory. Or, if you’re a little too conservative for the pink & orange craze to wear it openly on your feet or carry it on your shoulder, get in on it in a subtler way with a wallet that will be a burst of color every time you pull it out of your handbag. Ok, I know that’s a bit much for a wallet, even one as fabulous as the Orion. Once again, it’s Kate Spade to the rescue. Her Delano Remy Continental Wallet is just as chic and sophisticated, and a little less cumbersome. Rather than opening fully, it’s expandable, opening up to reveal card slots, a zippered pouch for coins, with storage on either side. It’s not really great for keeping a checkbook, but come on, how many of us still use checks for anything? Hell, the only reason I need a wallet is to carry credit cards, ID, the club cards for the stores where I shop, and maybe a few others things. I hardly ever even carry cash anymore. But what I love most about the Remy is the color, a beautiful tangerine. It also has tiny stud detailing on the outside for a little shine. It’s also on sale!
