True Religion Denim Jimmy Hoodie Jacket

Hey, 1985 called and it wants its denim jacket back. Did we go Back to the Future and no one told me? What’s next? The pastel cotton jackets from Miami Vice? I don’t know how it happened, but denim jackets are back in. I guess denim never really goes out of style. Well, jeans never do. The style of jeans just changes. Although I did see a guy on the DC Metro a while back in acid washed denim painter’s pants. No, really. Acid. Washed. And that’s all I have to say about that. But the denim jacket? That’s been pretty much relegated to truckers and bikers for quite a while now, hasn’t it? But if the new Vogue cover with Jessica “My Fifteen Minutes Are Almost Up” Biel is any indication, denim is back with a vengeance. I wouldn’t recommend trying to emulate Jessie in any way, unless it’s her uncanny ability to build an entire career on one mediocre family show and endless talk show appearances that promote, um, what exactly does she promote? I guess it’s like they say, if you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit. Anyway, we know Jessie didn’t pick her own ensemble for Vogue’s cover. That was done by an in-the-know Vogue stylist, so it’s safe to assume that denim jackets are back, um, in vogue. Heh. Want one? I know you do. Let’s start with this True Religion Denim Jimmy Hoodie Jacket.

True Religion has taken the traditional denim jacket and tweaked it a bit for a more modern look. Why layer your denim jacket over a hoodie when you can just buy the jacket with the hoodie attached? Brilliant! The inner fleece hoodie is attached at the shoulders, so you won’t have to worry about slippage or bunching. It still has the one button snap cuff, and button tabs at the waist, but the front snaps closed with a faux button closure look. It’s in a classic shade of indigo, with distressing in just the right spots. I like the embroidery on the front pockets, too. The fleece inner jacket zips closed for extra warmth, and has a kangaroo front pocket. It’s made from one hundred percent cotton, while the denim outer jacket is 98 percent cotton and 2 percent spandex for a little more give than plain denim. And it’s available now for $100 dollars off, for a price of $225 at Zappos.com.

Budget Saving Alternatives

Juicy Couture has their own take on the trend with this Tie Dye Denim Jacket. Tie dye usually conjures an image of a bright, multi-colored, abstract pattern, but they’ve kept it simple with a mostly white with light gray accent design. It looks sort of like a cloudy winter day. The sleeves have double snap buttons, and the chest pocket flaps also snap closed. The front of the jacket snaps closed as well, and all snaps have the Juicy crown logo on them. Low on the sides, you’ll find two welt pockets over a straight cut bottom hem. It’s made from 99 percent cotton, and just 1 percent spandex, which will still give some, but also keep its shape very well. It’s $198 at Zappos.com.

Now, we can’t talk about denim jackets without mentioning the original, can we? But why go traditional? Check out this Levi’s Cropped Trucker denim jacket in one of my favorite colors—pink! But I’ll be honest. As much as I love the color, even I have to admit this is a little too pink. What did they dye it in, Pepto Bismol? And to produce a jacket called Trucker in so shocking a shade of pink…well, that’s just odd. If I were to get this jacket, I might wash it with a little bleach to tone down the pink. It’s cropped, obviously, so if your hips are a problem area, don’t get this jacket. It will only accentuate the very issue you want to camouflage. It would just make you look even more pear-shaped. If you’re trying to accentuate a slim waist, this is the jacket for you. It has all the traditional Levi’s features—front welt pockets, dual chest pockets, and logo-embossed metal buttons, including down the front. No snaps here. It’s also available in white. Get both. It’s only $48 at Zappos.com.
