Marc Jacobs Ballet Flat

You can walk into any shoe store on any given day, and find a pair of basic, everyday shoes. Black, brown, navy, whatever color, for whatever occasion. How many times have you been in a hurry to get to an event and needed a pair of shoes to get you through the evening, or you just waited until the last minute to shop, so you settle for whatever’s there, whatever fits, and whatever’s affordable. I know I’ve done it. I can’t tell you how many pairs of shoes are sitting at the back of my closet, probably never to be worn again, because they were desperate, last-minute, necessity purchases made on the go. Well, I do what I can now to avoid being in that situation. I buy shoes when I need them for certain occasions, sure, but I give myself enough time to find what will really work, what I really like, and what I’ll be able to wear again. That’s part of why I like to find unique, and even unusual shoes to share here. I don’t let myself be constrained by plain black need-’em-now shoes anymore. I’ve built a collection that will take me anywhere, and I continue to add to it as time goes on. So when I run across shoes that are a little out of the ordinary, I take notice. Kind of like these Marc Jacobs ballet flats.

They look sort of like someone drew the designs on with a felt tip marker, don’t they? But that’s what I like about them. If they were plain white, they’d be oh-so-boring. The cute designs make them unique, and open up the possibilities for accessorizing. Obviously, they’ll go with just about anything black or white in your closet. For a switch, try pairing them with something in true red, or even pink. It will just make them stand out even more rather than fading into a black and white landscape, and these shoes deserve to be noticed. For more color, they also come in a chestnut print, which I don’t like at all. I think the simple black and white scheme is what makes this shoe. The sides are sueded, while the toe cap and heel are printed leather. The interior is also leather, and also covered in the graffiti print, as is the scalloped edging. The bow accent is a nice, traditional ballet flat detail. The synthetic outsole is made for traction, so it’s a good fall shoe that will wear well even when the weather’s not so great. Try them on for $269 at Zappos.com.

Budget Saving Alternatives

Now, when you look at the Game pointed toe flat, you’re probably thinking, what’s the big deal? It’s not so unusual. In fact, it’s actually kind of plain. This is true, until you get a close-up view and are able to notice not just the color differences, but the range of textures offered by the disparate patches of material. The shoe starts at the toe in a creamy suede, then moves to a fine wale corduroy, a textured sueded leather, a sturdy striped fabric, then finishes at the heel with a pearly almost-patent leather. It’s the ultimate fall shoe with the mix of materials and neutral colors. If the neutrals are too drab for you, it’s also available in a blue color scheme. But what makes the shoe even more unusual? It’s from Fergie’s collection. I would never expect something so sophisticated from her line. Maybe that’s snobby, but whatever. You’ve seen how she dresses. I can’t imagine her wearing these, much less designing them. If she really designs anything with her name on it. Who knows? In any case, this is a great shoe to add to your fall wardrobe, and you can do just that for $79.95 at Endless.com.

Check these babies out! Who needs ruby slippers when you can get the Kenneth Cole Unlisted Free Ride ballet flat? It has—wait for it—ribbons! How girly is that? The toe and smooth sides of the shoe are laced with a printed ribbon woven through the leather-like material. The ribbon ends in a pretty bow on the vamp. The upper material is a glossy cherry red, sure to turn heads. The footbed is lightly padded for comfort, and the toe box is rounded, giving your tootsies a little extra room without squishing. The embossed rubber sole will help you keep your footing, no matter the walking surface. Click your heels together and say there’s nothing like a sale! The Free Ride flat usually goes for $44.99, but you can get it right now for only $40.49 at heels.com. (Yes, they have more than just heels!)
