Lanvin Cap Toe Sneaker

So I’ve been reading all about how Michelle Obama wore an expensive pair of sneakers while volunteering at a D.C. food bank. The First Lady’s choice of apparel is always scrutinized, no matter what she’s doing. But it seems that for the first time in a long time, the First Lady actually has some style, and it’s not just a matter of throwing on a designer gown and calling it good. Mrs. Obama has been compared to Jackie Kennedy for her sense of style and her poise, and I have to agree. As for the sneaker incident, while I probably wouldn’t wear a pair of $540 shoes to a charity function, there’s no denying that these Lanvin Cap Toe sneakers are the epitome of casual chic.

The ones Michelle Obama wore were grey with pink metallic cap toes. Grey and pink is always a good combination, but I have to say, I’m kinda digging the darker color scheme on this sneaker. It’s navy blue denim with a black patent cap toe. The edges are trimmed with black grosgrain ribbon, which is also what the laces are made of, threaded through muted silver grommets. The rubber sole makes it comfortable and non-scuffing. In addition to the pink/grey and blue/black color schemes, they also come in pink or white. If you’re willing and able to shell out that $540, you can get them at Barneys.com.

If that’s a bit too steep for you, but you still like the look of fabric combined with patent accents, I have the answer: the Estella sneaker from the Lauren by Ralph Lauren line. It sports a canvas upper with synthetic patent trim. Ralph took it a step further, though, and added the patent-look accent not just to the toe, but the heel as well. Also on the heel is a stitched Ralph Lauren logo. You know, maybe designers should start doing that with all their clothes. It would save the paparazzi having to yell, “Who are you wearing?!” at stars on the red carpet. Anyway, Lauren seems to have put most of the detail in the heel, because it’s also a three quarter inch platform. Not quite the flat sneaker you may be used to. It laces up with white cotton laces. The estella also comes in pink, khaki, and white. They’re a steal at $48.95 at Zappos.com.

Budget Saving Alternative 2

Maybe you love the patent look, and accents on the toe and heel just aren’t enough for you. In that case, check out the Tretorn T56 patent sneaker. Never heard of Tretorn? The company was established in Sweden in the late 19th century, so they have a little bit of experience in designing shoes. The T56 has a completely patent leather upper, and a low profile if you don’t like a heel on your sneakers. A padded insole adds comfort while the rubber outsole provides sure footing. The shoe is also available in black and brown, and the laces match the colors of the shoes. The lace grommets also complement the colors of the shoes. They’re muted brass on the brown and navy sneakers, and muted silver on the black. Experience this bit of Scandinavian style for just $74.95 at Endless.com.

Cool! Are all these kicks comfortable enough for our NYC streets (the most painful streets in the world, more painful than even Paris)?

Hey Diane! I don’t know that I’d wear the Lanvins to walk NYC streets, only because of the price and I wouldn’t want to get them dirty! :-) But my personal experience is that Lauren sneakers are comfortable, and the Tretorns have a padded insole, so I think they’re a good bet.
