Giuseppe Zanotti Ballet Flat

I do love high-heeled shoes—platforms, pumps, or strappy sandals. But those don’t always go with summer fashions like shorts and capri pants. Sometimes, but not always. That’s where a great pair of flats comes in, especially ballet flats, which seem to never go out of style. Just when I thought I’d seen ballet flats in every color and pattern, I ran across the Giuseppe Zanotti E96117.

It’s a shame that the shoes are identified with an alphanumeric rather than a name because this color is called Celestina, which fits perfectly. They look like a bright sky dotted with tufts of white clouds, where the view changes from moment to moment depending on which way the wind is blowing. You see, the reversible sequins are sewn onto the fabric upper in such a way that with a light brush of the hand, they change direction, thereby changing color. Their leather lining will conform to your feet with wearing, and at just four ounces, it really will feel like you’re walking on air. The price will bring you back down to earth, though. They’ll set you back $553.95 at Zappos.com.

Budget Saving Alternatives

While daydreaming about owning a pair of Zanottis, I started looking around for another ballet flat that combines art and style. I found it. The Icon Apple Ballet Skimmer called Hygeia is decorated with a miniaturized replica of a portion of Gustav Klimt’s Medicine, which features Hygeia, the Greek goddess of health. At first glance, it looks like a fabric upper, but it’s completely printed leather. The velvet ribbon laced around the edge and tied in a bow on top adds a soft, feminine touch, while the lightly padded insole adds comfort. The painting it’s based on was destroyed in a 1945 fire, and only one photograph of it remains. Enjoy the enduring beauty of it every time you look down at your feet. It’s also available with a replica of Haruyo Morita’s Dance of Cranes. How often do you get to own a work of art for just $192.47? Add it to your collection at Endless.com.

If you’re just looking for a fun, flirty pair of ballet flats, check out Steve Madden’s Kappy. It comes in silver or black leather, a leopard print satin, or my favorite, the bright multi fabric. It’s a cute, almost tropical floral print with red grosgrain ribbon trim around the edge, ending in a slim top bow. Perfect to ride out the rest of spring and glide right into summer. With splashes of red, blue, yellow, and green on a mostly white background, they’ll go with just about anything. The leather soles are flexible to guarantee comfortable walking, and the breathable fabric lining will keep your tootsies cool in the summer heat. Own them for just $49.95 at Endless.com.
