Emilio Pucci Abstract Print Ballet Flat

Gray is the new black. Ok, I just made that up. But it sounds good, doesn’t it? Seems like whenever someone wants to make something sound cool, they say, “It’s the new black.” Like “Bitter is the New Black,” or, “Kate Gosselin is the new black.” The first one, sure. The second one, not so much. Not at all, really. But gray is actually pretty close to black, and both are fall colors, and you can wear gray and black together, and in the dark you can’t actually see any color, so gray may as well be black then, right? Right. So. Gray: The Official Color of Fall. Oh wait, that’s a whole other coolness campaign. Obviously, marketing isn’t my thing. Better stick to shoes, like these Emilio Pucci abstract print ballet flats.

Or maybe marketing totally is my thing, because I made up that part after Emilio Pucci. Yet again, the designer couldn’t come up with anything more creative than 794188 to name a fabulous shoe. Um, are we robots? What’s funny is I get irked about too-creative color names, too. Like lipstick. It can’t just be pink, or rose, or even, I dunno, pink. No, it has to be Dusky Dawn or Heathered Fantasy or some other stupid name that doesn’t tell me what the freaking color inside the tube is. I just want something between 794188 and Bijou Kiss. Is that too much to ask? I don’t think so. Anyway, I’m digging this Pucci ballet flat because of its funky pattern and low profile. I figured after those Louboutins, a girl’s feet might need a break, right? The upper is 100 percent leather, as are the lining and insole. The heel is only 5/8 of an inch, so no teetering or discomfort there. What I really like is that in between all the shades of gray and white are patches of navy and chocolate. (See? Navy and chocolate, and you know what colors I’m talking about, don’t you?) You can go all 794188 for $454 at Zappos.com.

Budget Saving Alternatives

For that price, you’d think the least they could do is give the shoe a proper name, huh? But that’s ok, because the Kelsi Dagger Tamia flat makes up for it. Now that is a rockin’ name. “Dagger. Kelsi Dagger. Buy my shoes or I’ll cut you.” She sounds like one badass designer. I was more than a little disappointed to learn that Kelsi Dagger isn’t a designer, or even a person, but the name given to a line of shoes created by the same company that makes the Pour la Victoire line. Sigh. Regardless, I still like these shoes. The leather upper features all-over pintucking, and conceals a one-inch wedge heel. Sewn onto the vamp is a cluster of multi-faceted beads for a little extra shine. The few strays down toward the sole make it seem like they’re about to roll off the shoe any minute. Wear these with a skirt, slacks, or jeans, and you can go casual or dressy. I’m sticking with the gray theme, but the Tamia also comes in black and navy, and it sells for $99.95 at Endless.com.

If Kelsi Dagger were a real person, she’d hang out with Very Volatile Betty. Or at least she’d wear her shoes. The VVB suede flat adds a unique touch with the dual-colored, multi-layered, suede upper. What look like three dainty chainlinks are threaded through the inner layer. I wonder if they go chink chink when you walk, the way spurs do. Then you’d hear Very Volatile Betty coming down the street, and you’d know to get out of her way. What? Would you just rather read, “Look at these pretty, pretty shoes.”? I didn’t think so. The Betty has a rounded toe, with synthetic lining and outsole, and also comes in brown, which, contrary to what anyone may tell you, is not the new black. Stick with the gray for $60 at Piperlime.com.
