Spring is finally here, and you’re probably going to be outside a lot more often now. Maybe walking through the park, or around the outdoor mall, if there’s one where you live. You still need to carry your essentials, though, and maybe a couple of extras. Those April showers can catch you off guard, so it’s not a bad idea to carry a compact umbrella with you. Whether shopping, or just enjoying the sunshine, it’s nice to have your hands free, and that’s where a cross-body bag really comes in handy. You know when else it comes in handy? When you’re smuggling snacks into the movie theater. Oh, don’t give me that. Like you’ve never done it. I’m totally advocating it here, and you know why? Because Hollywood and movie theaters have pissed me off. As if it weren’t bad enough that they were charging outrageous prices for tickets, and requiring people to take out second mortgages to buy a small popcorn and soda, now it seems that they can’t even come out with original movies. How many remakes are out there now? Fifty? Five hundred? Every day, I see news about yet another movie being remade, and it’s not even older movies, like from the ’50s or ’60s. Oh no. They’re all ’80s movies! We’re barely 30 years out of the ’80s, and they’re remaking all the classics. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Footloose. Red Dawn. No, really. Yeah, I don’t know why either. The Karate Kid. And, I just read today, Private Benjamin. You know what move studios and movie theater owners? You can bite me. I’m not paying ten bucks to watch a recycled movie because none of you can come up with any original ideas that are worth my time and money, and then paying a small fortune for what actually costs less than two dollars to get the whole movie experience with popcorn and a drink. So yeah, get a crossbody bag, pop some popcorn at home, throw in some Twizzlers and a bottle of Coke, and head over to the theater to watch the same stuff you probably watched as a kid, only new and supposedly improved. This Marc by Marc Jacobs Classic Q Ukita will hold all of that and more.

To get all that stuff into the theater and not get busted, you need plenty of space. The Ukita is 15 inches side, 12.5 inches high, and 5.5 inches deep. See, theater employees might get suspicious if you try to come in with a backpack. I mean, who carries a backpack into a theater, right? But a cross-body bag that passes for a purse? You’re in! The Ukita is made from soft leather, with loose ruching detail. The interior is lined with signature printed satin, and includes a back wall zip pocket and several slip pockets. I love it in this pastel blue, which is perfect for spring, but it also comes in brown and black. If you’d prefer to carry it as a handbag, it has a top handle, and the shoulder strap is detachable. The strap gives it a 19 inch drop, so it won’t get in the way while you’re signing the loan paperwork for your movie tickets. What? Do I sound cheap? Whatever. There’s no justifiable reason for movies and movie theater snacks to cost as much as they do, other than everyone involved is making a huge profit. You know, during the Great Depression, a lot of people sought relief from their situations at the theater. They could do that because it didn’t cost an arm and a leg to get in. They could even see double features for affordable prices. You’d think Hollywood could say, hey, you know what? Times are tough. How ’bout we slash ticket prices, even just temporarily, to give everyone a break and a little escape? No, instead they raise prices and bitch about how people don’t go to the movies anymore. So I say again—bite me. The Ukita costs $498 at Zappos.com.

Budget Saving Alternatives

Yeah, I know, that’s expensive too. And do you really want to put food and a sweating bottle of soda into a $498 bag? No, I wouldn’t either. But I’m looking out for you. Check out this B. Makowsky Lites Bergen Crossbody bag. Hey, designers. Can you guys decide on one word and stick with it? I see crossbody, cross body, and cross-body. Make up your freaking minds. Thanks. Anyway, the Bergen is made from leather, and boasts a satin lining inside, with a back wall zip pocket. You’ll also find a couple of zip pockets on the front exterior. The top zips closed, so your movie snacks won’t fall out and can be hidden from view. It’s smaller than the Ukita, but you’ll still be able to fit whatever you want to carry inside. This pale green—called aloe—is a great spring color. The Bergen is also available in ice and nutmeg. Get it for just $128 at Endless.com.

Orange! The yummy color that is all the rage this spring, and the Tignanello Multi Pocket Organizer has it. That’s a horrible name, really boring, but I guess it gets the point across. Besides, with all those extra pockets, you might be able to manage a pack of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups along with everything else. Ooh, I’d better be getting some of those in my Easter basket! In addition to the pockets outside, both front and back, inside is a back wall zip pocket, and logoed satin lining. The bag is made from leather, and also comes in some other great spring colors—sunshine, cloud, dark turquoise, and aqua. Get a couple of them since they’re only $79 at Endless.com.

As you’ve seen, one of spring’s biggest trends is neutrals. Mostly, neutral platform pumps, which go great with jeans, slacks, just about anything, really. Whether you go with those, or opt for neutral flats instead, you need a matching handbag, right? Chances are, you have at least one basic-colored handbag in your closet, a black or a brown, maybe a tan or even off-white. Those will work for a lot of outfits, and most of your shoes, but even colors like this that are usually so versatile can clash with the latest neutrals of beige, ecru, and even blush-hued beige. If you’re going to work a trend, then work it all the way, don’t do it half-assed. You know what happens when you go half-assed with fashion? You end up looking like Dakota Fanning, who looks like a poor imitation of Lindsay Lohan, and trust me, I never thought I’d say that about anyone. Good grief, girls. If you’re not part of the punk scene, leave the ripped up tights in the trash, ok? And by the way, are celebs practicing product placement in paparazzi photos now? How much did Dakota get paid to hold that can by the bottom so the brand would show up so well in that “spontaneous” photo? It’s a racket, I’m telling you. Paparazzi and celebs teaming up for photo op commercials. You heard it here first. Anyway, back to spring and trends that don’t involve trashy clothing. Need a handbag to go with those neutral shoes you just bought for spring? Start with the Marc by Marc Jacobs Petal To The Metal Evie Hobo.

I love the way this bag looks. This color is called cement, and it’s perfect for the neutral trend. It’s made from beautifully textured Italian leather, and features topstitch detailing. Outside you’ll find a good-sized pocket on the front, while inside there’s a back wall zip pocket. The lining contrasts from the exterior in a boldly colored, abstract print fabric. The top zips closed, and all the hardware is in gold tone metal, including the cute little bird-shaped logo plate on the front. If you’re already set with a neutral bag, the Evie also comes in black and grape juice, which is a fantastic purple shade. Obviously. The Evie comes with a dust bag to keep it looking great when it’s not being used, but I imagine this bag wouldn’t spend a lot of time on your closet shelf! Then again, at $498, it might end up staying on the store’s shelf until it goes on sale. It’s available at Endless.com.

Budget Saving Alternatives

I can’t figure out why anyone would name anything after a site that developed and then tested nuclear weapons, but maybe that’s just how Tommy Hilfiger rolls. Yes, sure, fine, there’s other stuff in Los Alamos, and I’m sure it’s a very nice place to live, if you don’t mind having three eyes and a couple of extra appendages. I’ll take your word for it. Despite its questionable name, I do like Hilfiger’s Los Alamos Carryall. It has a very classic look, which may be another hark back to the ’40s. It’s also a little sporty with its grosgrain trim. The Los Alamos is all leather, right down to its dual handles. It also has a detachable canvas shoulder strap in case that extra appendage is otherwise occupied. The interior is lined with a pretty floral twill fabric, and features a back wall zip pocket, and leather logo plate. It’s also available in black, but I don’t like the contrasting grosgrain trim. Get it for $148 at Endless.com.

The Prezzo Bow Hobo is a little on the darker neutral side, but it’s a nice, simple design that would be a great addition to any wardrobe. I really like the gathered bow detail on the front. It gives the bag a feminine touch. And check out the hardware up close. They’re not just the usual studs or rings. They’re sculptured, providing even more visual interest. Another cool thing about this bag is that it’s synthetic, so all you vegans out there can carry it with no guilt. The lining is also synthetic—nylon—and features a back wall zip pocket. It zips closed at the top to keep everything secure. In addition to this tan, the Prezzo Bow also comes in black, white, and yellow, which would also be perfect for spring. The best part? It’s only $50 at Endless.com. Get two!

You’ve seen old reruns of Bewitched, right? Remember when Samantha would get some kind of weird witchy disease that affected her magic? She couldn’t go to a regular doctor, obviously, so she had to call the witch doctor. Get it? Witch doctor? Anyway, she’d say, “Dr. Bombay! Dr. Bombay! Emergency, come right away!” And Dr. Bombay would appear, and it would always be obvious he’d been in the middle of some sort of hedonistic activity. He’d be in a Hawaiian shirt with a lei around his neck, or be in mid-golf swing. Because, you know, he’s a doctor. Why am I telling you this? Well, it popped into my head when I was looking at handbags and ran across this Marc by Marc Jacobs Bombay Satchel. It even sort of looks like an old fashioned doctor’s bag, doesn’t it? Makes me wonder where Marc Jacobs got his inspiration.

This Bombay Satchel is much nicer than a plain ol’ doctor’s bag, though. For one thing, it’s not black. In fact, it’s not even brown. Supposedly. The description calls it deep plum. Sorry, but to me, that’s purple. I can see this bag has a sort of burgundy tinge to it, but I wouldn’t call it plum. It’s also available in black. The other reason it’s nicer than a doctor’s satchel is that instead of stiff, unyielding leather, the Bombay is made from soft, slouchy leather. And let’s not forget the cute little padlock charm dangling from the front. It adds a bit of whimsy to what would otherwise be a serious-looking bag. The lining is a great geometric print fabric, the top zips closed, and there are plenty of pockets inside and out for extra storage. It also comes with a dust bag. Try it out for $498 at Endless.com.

Budget Saving Alternatives

If you really want to punch up your wardrobe in winter, add a bright accessory. The Sak Silverlake Convertible Satchel in, well, punch, is just what the witch doctor ordered. What makes it convertible? Well, you can either carry it as a satchel like it is in this photo, by the dual handles that give the bag a six-inch drop. Or, you can use the detachable shoulder strap and carry it as a hobo bag with a ten and a half-inch drop. Either way, the Silverlake offers plenty of storage at 16 inches wide and 10 inches high, not to mention the inner zip and slip pockets. I love how the dual handles are braided, too. The entire bag is made from one hundred percent leather, and the interior is lined in retro-print fabric. In addition to punch, it comes in twilight and teak. That’s navy and brown, in case you’re wondering. Get it for just $200 at Piperlime.com.

Speaking of odd names for colors, this Etienne Aigner Vienna Satchel comes in this color, called vachetta. Seriously. I’m not even going to bother to look that word up to see if it actually means something in Italian or French or whatever. It’s cream, ok? Or beige, even. Vachetta? I’m not saying that. Complaining aside, it’s a gorgeous bag. I like Etienne Aigner stuff because it’s classically designed. Very sophisticated. Sometimes it’s fun to find off beat, unusual looking bags, but there are times when you need something that communicates class, like at a job interview. For those times, Aigner is the way to go. The Vienna has dual, rolled handles that give the bag a 7.5-inch drop. A platform bottom keeps the bag upright when it’s set down, and a top zip closure keeps your belongings secure. Inside, you’ll find fabric lining with a back wall zip pocket, and a few slip pockets. It also comes in a pretty maple color. And it’s on sale! Usually $142, you can get it now for only $102.24 at Zappos.com.

I’ve realized I have a problem. An orange problem. I have somehow gone from hating the color to the point of dreading Halloween each year, to being enthralled with it and actually buying orange clothing. I have decided I need a color intervention, and what better color to eradicate pumpkin orange than regal purple? Plus, the fact that this Marc Jacobs bag is called Classic Q Groovee just makes it fun in its own right.

The other cool thing about it is that it’s not just purple. Oh no. It’s electric violet. The polished silver metal hardware adds to its bright vibe. Rolled leather handles give it a seven-inch drop, and it has a detachable flat leather shoulder strap, too, increasing the drop to 14 inches. A logo tag with a buckled leather strap is attached to the handle, and the flat leather base is protected by metal feet. The top zips closed with a long leather pull tab. Inside the bag you’ll find printed lining, a leather strap key ring, and pockets to help keep your things organized. It also comes with a price tag of $498 at eLuxury.com.

Want some color therapy without the therapy price? Dooney & Bourke has a cute little pouchette that will satisfy a penchant for purple. Plus, it’s pretty. Pardon the alliteration. Anyway, it’s just the right size to carry the necessities without being too bulky. It has a single adjustable handle that gives a six-inch drop. It has an eye-catching metal logo plate, and silver toned hardware. Through the top zip closure, you’ll find a lined interior with a back wall zip pocket, and a slip pocket just for your cell phone. There’s also a handy key ring hook. The pouchette can be yours for just $155 at Zappos.com.

The more I look at Latico Leathers bags, the more I like them. This Nappa Double Handle Tote is made with a lightweight leather, made super soft by their intensive milling process. It’s a go-anywhere bag with lots of room, but it’s not too big to carry by hand. The zip top closure keeps everything secure, and the exterior pocket will let you keep the most important items handy. It’s accented with antiqued brass hardware. It usually goes for $190, but it’s available now for only $179.44 at eBags.com.

When I was a schoolgirl, I had a green canvas messenger bag that I carried until an ink stain rotted through the bottom and punched a good-sized hole through the fabric. I used to pin all sorts of buttons and jewels to the front of it – my idea of a fashion statement, I guess. I had one favorite button, a mother-of-pearl, shiny moon and star made of enamel. I lost that button one day in a fire drill and never saw it again – and I’ve missed it ever since. Now, I know I’ll never find another like it, but Marc Jacob’s newest messenger bag, the Stones Joseph Messenger, reminds me strongly of the bag I once had, and the button that once adorned it.

It’s got a soft grained black leather exterior with a gold-toned studded leather strap and a magnetic closure. The bag is hung with hammered gold hardware and has a detachable rear pouch with two zip pockets. As well, it has a detailed interior with plenty of room for whatever you need to carry, be it a file of briefs or a simple datebook. Here’s what I like best about the Stones Joseph: Marc Jacobs has this delicious fascination with Art Deco shapes, and the bag is adorned with a blue metal and stone ornament at the clasp. It’s deconstructed gracefully, in such a way that you can’t take your eyes from it. It certainly makes up for all the ornaments I used to pin on my bag. This alone would get me to pay the $2,175.00, if it wasn’t also an absolutely amazing bag. Barneys.com has it.

Messenger bags are coming back into style for those businesswomen that don’t want to carry a briefcase. The Bally Ririe-00 is a sumptuous leather cross-body messenger made of rich black leather with an adjustable strap. The dimensions are eleven inches by twelve inches, with a three-inch depth. Find it for $653.95 at Zappos.com.

Berry, berry quite contrary…in Mark Jacobs that is when it’s this vivid berry colored quilted stam.

And what exactly is a stam? I wasn’t quite sure either, but after looking for 10 minutes via my search engine I gave up hope and realized it’s probably one of those fashion-forward words that haute couture designer types like to use to make the rest of us feel like silly little creatures.

I give Marc Jacobs credit. I usually hate quilted purses, but this design is deliciously vivid and scrumptious in soft padded quilted leather and luscious berry hue…makes you just want to bite right into it.

The texture of this bag looks like it would provide a feature light cushion right under your arm. Plus the rich purple berry set against bright golden clasp closures, ringed hardware, and a chunky chain shoulder strap make it eye candy for all to see.

I simply love the antique-inspired clasp closure the best. It’s my favorite element of the entire design. I don’t have anything that would go with berry in my wardrobe for fall, but a purse like this makes me want to run out and purchase some sleek black skinny pants and a tailored jacket – with a complimenting berry blouse or scarf to match this delicious purse.

Infuse your life with some healthy berry. The Marc Jacobs 2-Way Quilted Stam is $1,373.91 at Diabro.com.

This cranberry Rampage Fashionista Satchel with darling florets is just $78 at Endless.com.

I couldn’t resist this bowler-inspired lavender satchel either. The Latico Faye North South Ring Satchel is $195, also from Endless.com.
